Depression is a common condition affecting more than 1 out of 20 Americans 12 years of age and older according to the CDC.  It is a disease that can affect a person of any age, race or social standing.  Depression is a serious medical illness and is characterized by persistent sadness and sometime irritability.  Depression can cause suffering for depressed individuals and can also have negative effects on their families and the communities in which they live.
