Lisa C. Paul, an Appleton native, became friends with her elderly Russian tutor, Inna Meiman, while studying and working as a nanny in Russia in 1984.
When Meiman was denied a visa to leave the USSR for treatment for aggressive cancer, Paul went on a hunger strike and lobbied American officials in Washington on Meiman's behalf. (Meiman's visa was apparently denied because her husband was active in a human rights group.)
Her friend finally received the visa in 1987, but died three weeks after arriving in Washington.
Paul relates the story in her memoir "Swimming in the Daylight: An American Student, a Soviet-Jewish Dissident, and the Gift of Hope" which was just released in February 2011.
Paul will do a book talk on Thursday, April 7. Paul will be on hand to sell and sign books. Sponsored by the Alice Baker Library in Eagle.
